NIGHT // LIGHTS

mixed media moodscapes of light and color

a collaboration by Danielle Webster and Raphael Shattenkirk

ARTIST STATEMENT

NIGHT // LIGHTS is a series of illuminated photographs by photographer Danielle Webster and mixed media artist Raphael Shattenkirk that explores the spectrum of space between light and dark, and aims to change the way a piece of art influences the environment around it.

This series stands as a unique way to bring photography to life by offering authentic entertainment that serves as more than an art piece, but a type of light therapy. These urban moodscapes or ‘well-being zones’ are intended to usher in an energetic calmness and positivity. Such as with light therapy, there is a sense of relief and happiness within these moody landscapes that encourages the viewer to be drawn in, to get close and experience stillness. There is also a social aspect that celebrates play and community, to experience these lit images both visually and energetically, and talk about it with others. Designed to have a specific emotional impact, the goal of this series is to leave viewers feeling more positive after the experience with a sense of calmness and creativity.

PROJECT INSPIRATION

The past 3 years have seen a rise in health and happiness; from drinks that supply the immune system to dedicated spaces around the world offering an emotional outlet for those in need of a recharge. The physical and emotional tax of the last two years is establishing a holistic and sensitive approach to wellbeing. Consumers, artists, and everyday people alike all have an appetite for optimism and uplifting content. As we move into the next year, we are channeling a creative playfulness within art and consumerism that symbolizes growth and freedom. Technology and social media has shifted our focus to integrate multi-sensory elements for a more immersive experience. As we think about how digital components are ever changing the physical world, we want to use some of that technology for play over work, as a safe space to slow down.

PROCESS & TECHNIQUE

These 6 mixed-media pieces combine printed and framed photography with custom cut LED neon that bring a 2D image into the 3rd dimension by forming illuminated urban moodscapes. These images act as visual portals, offering a whole new world of creation to gain a more intimate, in-person experience.

Consisting of photography shot at nighttime in urban areas, each piece is electronically timed to slowly and gradually illuminate as natural light fades and the sun goes down. Each piece is on at night and then gradually the neon illumination fades as morning arrives. These images will look different at different times of day, giving a very dynamic and fluctuating ambiance to a room and the people in it. This collection combines art and functionality by turning photographs of lights at night into literal night-lights.

The added element of neon light elevates a gallery event into an experience of interactions; both between the light and the image, and between the pieces and the people in the space. As a whole this collection has a dual harmony not only in the subject matter, but through the playful glow of colored lines and shapes from the LED lights themselves. Individually, each moodscape can also stand alone with its subtle yet vibrant energy that lights up a room as a lamp would, bringing it closer to functionality than art.
